Materials Library — Rare Earth & Critical Materials

Polymer selection sits at the centre of our Material Engineering discipline, but the assemblies our clients build rarely stop at plastic. Magnets, phosphors, optical glass and structural alloys frequently share the same housing, and the choice of one constrains the other. This library documents the rare earth and critical materials our engineering team references during material selection, tooling design and DFM review.

Material photography and reference diagrams below are internal visual references produced for this library. The refining, application and program-relevance notes accompanying each material are Elefant MFG's own technical summary, not a transcription of the image content.
Raw scandium mineral sample with reference notes on refining and applications
Scandium reference sample

Scandium

Sc · Z=21
Refining

Recovered mainly as a byproduct of bauxite, titanium and uranium/rare-earth processing rather than mined directly. Concentrated by solvent extraction and ion exchange, converted to scandium oxide, then reduced to metal.

Industrial Applications

Aluminium-scandium master alloys that raise strength and weldability without adding weight — aerospace airframes, high-end sporting goods and additively manufactured aluminium parts; also a solid oxide fuel cell electrolyte dopant.

Elefant MFG Relevance

A reference point in metal-to-plastic replacement studies for our automotive programs — when a client asks whether a component should stay aluminium or move to advanced polymer, Al-Sc alloys set the lightweight-metal benchmark we engineer against.

Raw yttrium mineral sample with reference notes on refining and applications

Yttrium

Y · Z=39
Refining

Extracted from xenotime and monazite ores by acid leaching, solvent extraction and ion-exchange separation from other rare earths; refined to yttrium oxide, then reduced to metal by calciothermic reduction.

Industrial Applications

Yttria-stabilized zirconia structural ceramics and oxygen sensors, LED/display phosphors, YAG laser crystals, and a grain-refining additive in aluminium and magnesium alloys.

Elefant MFG Relevance

Yttria-stabilized zirconia shows up in wear-resistant sensor and instrumentation housings on our Industrial & Offshore programs — its behaviour is a data point in tooling-material compatibility reviews for high-wear cavity inserts.

Raw lanthanum mineral sample with reference notes on refining and applications

Lanthanum

La · Z=57
Refining

The most abundant light rare earth. Separated from bastnäsite/monazite concentrate by solvent extraction, precipitated and calcined to lanthanum oxide, then reduced to metal.

Industrial Applications

NiMH battery electrodes, fluid catalytic cracking catalysts in petroleum refining, high-refractive-index camera and optical lens glass, and carbon-arc lighting.

Elefant MFG Relevance

Raw cerium mineral sample with reference notes on refining and applications

Cerium

Ce · Z=58
Refining

The most abundant rare earth overall. Recovered from bastnäsite/monazite, separated by solvent extraction, and converted to cerium oxide (ceria) or other cerium compounds.

Industrial Applications

Automotive catalytic converter oxygen storage, glass and mirror polishing compound (ceria), UV-absorbing glass and coatings, and diesel fuel-borne catalysts.

Elefant MFG Relevance

Ceria-based polishing is directly relevant to the cosmetic-grade optical and glass finishes specified on some Automotive and Consumer Electronics tooling programs we support.

Raw praseodymium mineral sample with reference notes on refining and applications

Praseodymium

Pr · Z=59
Refining

Co-extracted with neodymium from bastnäsite/monazite as "didymium" concentrate, then separated by solvent extraction and ion exchange, refined to oxide and reduced to metal.

Industrial Applications

Alloyed with neodymium in high-strength NdFeB-type magnets, yellow glass and ceramic colorant, and Pr/Nd didymium glass welding-goggle filters.

Elefant MFG Relevance

Praseodymium-alloyed magnet grades are a material-selection variable in acoustic transducer and motor programs, traded off against cost and thermal-stability targets during our process engineering review.

Raw neodymium mineral sample with reference notes on refining and applications

Neodymium

Nd · Z=60
Refining

Separated from didymium concentrate by solvent extraction and ion exchange, refined to neodymium oxide or chloride, then reduced to metal by electrolysis or calciothermic reduction.

Industrial Applications

NdFeB permanent magnets — the strongest commercially available — used in speakers, microphones, motors and actuators; Nd:YAG laser rods; and rubber-polymerization catalysts.

Elefant MFG Relevance

Neodymium magnets sit inside several of the product categories we serve directly — wireless earphones, power tools, automotive electromechanical components — making Nd a recurring material-selection variable alongside the plastic housings and tooling we optimize around it.

Reference sample and notes for promethium

Promethium

Pm · Z=61
Refining

The only rare earth with no stable isotopes. Not mined from ore — produced synthetically as a nuclear fission byproduct and isolated by chemical separation.

Industrial Applications

Historically used in luminous paint and betavoltaic nuclear batteries for spacecraft and remote instrumentation; largely superseded and tightly regulated today.

Elefant MFG Relevance

Not applicable to our client programs. Included for materials-library completeness given its radioactivity and the absence of a commercial supply chain.

Raw samarium mineral sample with reference notes on refining and applications

Samarium

Sm · Z=62
Refining

Separated from bastnäsite/monazite concentrate by solvent extraction, refined to samarium oxide, then reduced to metal by calciothermic reduction or electrolysis.

Industrial Applications

Samarium-cobalt (SmCo) magnets, valued over NdFeB for high-temperature stability and corrosion resistance — used in aerospace, and high-temperature motor and sensor applications.

Elefant MFG Relevance

Where a program needs magnet performance beyond the thermal limits of standard NdFeB — under-hood automotive or industrial motor housings, for example — SmCo is the alternative our material engineering evaluates.

Raw europium mineral sample with reference notes on refining and applications

Europium

Eu · Z=63
Refining

Isolated using its unique reducibility to the +2 oxidation state, which allows selective separation from bastnäsite/monazite concentrate ahead of the other lanthanides; refined to oxide, then metal.

Industrial Applications

Red and blue phosphors in LED, CFL and display screens; anti-counterfeiting security inks that fluoresce under UV on currency and documents.

Elefant MFG Relevance

Europium phosphor performance is a reference point in material selection for display and indicator-light components inside the consumer-electronics housings we help bring to production.

Raw gadolinium mineral sample with reference notes on refining and applications

Gadolinium

Gd · Z=64
Refining

Extracted from monazite/bastnäsite, separated by solvent extraction and ion exchange, refined to oxide and reduced to metal.

Industrial Applications

MRI contrast agents, neutron-absorbing control rods and radiation shielding, magnetic-refrigeration research, and phosphor host material.

Elefant MFG Relevance

Gadolinium's neutron-shielding role occasionally surfaces on Industrial & Offshore programs where instrumentation housings reference radiation-shielding-grade material specifications.

Raw terbium mineral sample with reference notes on refining and applications

Terbium

Tb · Z=65
Refining

Recovered in small quantities from ion-adsorption clay ores and bastnäsite, separated by solvent extraction, refined to oxide and reduced to metal.
